A soldier writes home: May 1917 - July 1919
This typescript volume, ‘A soldier writes home, May 1917 – July 1919,’ relates to the First World War service of 18321 Lance Corporal Rupert Henry Treganowan, 2nd Signal Squadron, 4th Light Horse Brigade. Contained within are typed transcripts of his letters home to his family throughout the course of his service. The letters begin by detailing his embarkation from Australia and troopship journey to Egypt in May/June 1917, as well as his subsequent transfer to the 1st Australian Airline Section of the Desert Mounted Corps whose role it was to run telegraph and telephone wires. Throughout 1917 and 1918, Treganowan details in his letters the conditions he and the Australians faced, as well as the progress of the campaign in Palestine. In July 1918, he was sent to join the 4th Signal Troop of the 2nd Signal Squadron. In these closing months of the war Treganowan details several of the major battles, including the Battle of Megiddo in September 1918, and enters Damascus at the conclusion of the war. With the surrender of the Ottoman Empire in October, the Australian Light Horse was sent back to Egypt where they played a pivotal role in restoring order during the uprising of March and April 1919, something which Treganowan records. The letters conclude with his return to Australia in July 1919. This volume was compiled by his daughter in 1987.
