Description
Diary relating to the First World War service of 53 Signaller Alfred Ernest Forbes, 37th Battalion. The diary covers the period of Forbes’ embarkation in June to August 1916. Forbes’ notes, that his diary is not an ordinary day to day written account, but from his memory, written days or even weeks after the events. He covers events on board ship, his time in Albany, Western Australia and Cape Town, South Africa and mentions the perils of German submarines. Forbes writes about his four days of leave in London and notes amongst other sights, St Pauls Cathedral and the captured German submarine UC- 5 on the river Thames. In the rear of the book are signal training notes.
