Description
Australian soldiers walk with their heads down cast as they pass through the landscape as temporary travellers traversing the puddled roads of Albert on the Western Front in France. The statue of the virgin on top of the church of Notre Dame de Brebieres (Our lady of the Ewes) hangs at a precarious angle having been dislodged by German artillery in 1915. This common sight to all soldiers who passed through Albert and was locally reproduced on post cards and sent to families around the world.
