Damage sustained to the aileron of a Douglas Boston A28-5 aircraft, captained by 407424 Flying Officer (FO) Norman Peter Coles Gunson whilst on operation over Ring Ring, New Britain. FO Gunson and his crew, including, 406671 FO Arthur Curlewis Young and 1765 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Claude Robert Mascot Sladen were undertaking a low level search of the area when their aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft gunfire. Sustaining damage to the aircraft’s port engine and fuel tank, the crew were able to bomb Gasmata airstrip before flying their damaged aircraft back to base. For their actions, they were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944. This photograph is part of a photographic scrapbook compiled by Flt Lt Norman Peter Coles Gunson, 22 Squadron, RAAF, covering his service during the Second World War in New Guinea. The Memorial also holds the log book of Flt Lt Gunson (PR05338). For selected photographs from this album, search P10854*
