Collection related to 2784336 Signalman Stuart Lindsay Weller, 104 Signal Squadron, and his service in Vietnam between 1967 and 1968.
A "resettlement area" just north of Vung Tau, Vietnam. One of 477 colour 35mm transparencies taken or collected by 2784336 Signalman (Sig) Stuart Lindsay Weller, 104 Signal Squadron, relating to his service in Vietnam between 1967 and 1968. Sig Weller notes that the term resettlement was quite loaded: "... all the inhabitants had been forcefully plucked from their villages or locations around Phuoc Tuy (and possibly locations further afield than that) and dumped in little hastily built huts 'for their own safety' and you could also read into that 'where we can keep an eye on you.' ... Even though these people had lived in their communities for generations, it made no difference: if you weren’t 'under the protection of the Saigon Government', then obviously you were a part of the enemy we were fighting. Whether these people liked it or not, they were relocated to this area, which was bulldozed out of the delta. The people lost all their rice fields, their animals and were separated from their ancestors so it’s little wonder there was some unhappiness. As we drove by on our way back to Nui Dat after a beach run this anger was evident, with some folk coming out of their new houses and shaking fists at us or throwing the odd stone."
