Sig Weller notes that Alan "... was offered, and was able to take up, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award I had initially been given but had to decline when I was informed I had to begin my National Service training on 20 April, 1966. The award program was for a week, to begin on 24 April, and about all I could say was I had a prior engagement."
