Childs, Thelma Minnie (Matron, b.1914 - d.2003)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of Matron Thelma Minnie Childs (nee Moxham), Australia, America, Canada, United Kingdom and New Guinea. Collection consists of letters, certificates, newspaper clippings, a manuscript titled 'Flying Nurses: The Nursing Career of Thelma Moxham' and a book titled 'Into the Valley' by John Hersey. The collection highlights Childs' nursing career both before and during the war, and details the circumstances of her being awarded the Royal Red Cross medal. Many of the letters in the collection are congratulatory correspondence on this honour. There is also one letter terminating her appointment in the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service on grounds of her marriage in 1945. The book was given to Thelma by its author, John Hersey, and features notes made by Thelma during her travels, including signatures of people she travelled with.
