No 5 Mk 1 Grenade
Description
The No 5 Mk 1 hand fragmentation grenade consists of an oval cast iron body with externally segmented grooves. The body is lacquered on the inside and outside. In the base of the grenade is a threaded plug which accepts an aluminium cap. The firing mechanism consists of a striker, lever, spring and safety pin which are attached through a central chamber which houses the detonator. The grenade is painted black. Markings - H & TV; 6 - 15.
History / Summary
The No 5 hand grenade, Mills Pattern was introduced into service in May 1915. It was the standard British Army hand grenade until replaced by the Number 6 Mills Pattern in 1917.
