Description

German Model 1917 stick grenade. The grenade warhead is made from sheet steel and has an iron belt hook attached to one side. The shaft is made from wood and features an aluminium screw cap at the base of the wooden handle. removing the screw cap reveals a weight with a cloth wire which operates the friction igniter that arms the grenade. markings - VOR GEBRAUCH SPRENKAPSEL; ELB; 5 1/2 SEK - ELR.

History / Summary

German stick grenade associated with the service of Captain Duncan Victor Mulholland. Duncan Mullholland enlisted on 25 January 1915 at Liverpool, New South Wales. On 13 June he embarked from Sydney as a Corporal, service number 655 on board HMAT Suevic for Egypt with the 12th light Horse Regiment (LHR). He landed at Gallipoli in late August and was tranferred to 1 LHR. He was later transferred to the Anti Aircraft Section, and then the 3rd Battalion. In France in 1916 he was seconded to 1 Machine Gun Company (MGC). In September 1917 he was transferred to 3 MGC. On 31 May 1918 he was received multiple shell wounds and was admitted to the 3rd Field Ambulance. He died of his wounds that day and was buried near the 15th Casualty Clearing Station near Ebblingham in France.
