Hales No 3 Rifle Grenade
Description
Hales rifle grenade. The grenade is manufactured from cast steel and brass. The fragmentation jacket is made from cast iron and is segmented. A steel rod is attached to the grenade body. Brass fixtures attached to the base of the grenade hold the steel rod and grenade warhead in place. There is an impact fuze on the top of the grenade body. The fragmentation jacket is black in colour and a red band is painted the base of the grenade. Brass fittings and the steel rod are kept in original colours. Markings - THE COTTON POWDER CO LTD; LONDON; HALES PATENT.
History / Summary
The Hales Number 3 rifle grenade was issued to the British Army in 1915 and was used throughout the First World War on the Western Front until stocks were all used.
