Description

'The Snowy River Marchers, their war effort and afterwards' by W C Stegemann. An account of the Snowy River Recruiting March from Delegate to Goulburn January 1916. Provides context (losses on Gallipoli, the "Lusitania") and background to the recruiting drive (other rural marches). Describes their equipment, daily routine, camps, reception at towns along route, analyses the effectiveness of the march. Describes their service with the 55th Battalion on the Western Front, repatriation, lack of assistance for returned men, memorials erected in Snowy Mountains area. Appendices include map, names of men, poems, list of gallantry awards and colour photographs.
