Walter 'Wal' Stanley Gudgeon (VX4934) as a Lieutenant, the 2/8th Battalion, 1940-1943, interviewed by Harry Martin for The Keith Murdoch Sound Archive of Australia in the War of 1939-1945
Born in England 1904, one of seven children, early working life in England, travels to Australia on Orsova on 10 pound assisted passage, being a child in England during the First World War, joins CMF transfers to AIF as WO1 quartermaster, serves in Middle East, Egypt, Libya, Greece, Crete. Describes German paratroop landings on Crete. Troops didn't regard German soldiers as superior. Australians had great self esteem but were let down by lack of equipment and supplies. Evacuation of surviving forces to Egypt. Recuperates, doesn't rejoin 2/8th but serves in depot stores. Returns to Australia in 1943 on HMT Redula, terrible conditions on board.
