Description

This footage was filmed by Trooper Hugh Carlyle who was killed in action on 18 February 1970. Trooper Carlyle never saw these films as they were sent back to Australia for processing. The following description was adapted from information provided by Robert Taylor who also served with 3 Cavalry Regiment. Shows bridge across 'Song Co May' taken facing south from APX grid Ref. 378573. This is the only road between Baria and Vung Tau this bridge is APX 3 Km South of Baria and Shows a bus heading north across bridge. Panning to the right shows a boat with Long Son Island in the background. Recreation leave in Vung Tau Badcoe Club. Some where on that same road heading toward Vung Tau (Route 15). Possibly Ap Phouc Thanh grid 34516 or Xa Thang Nhuit grid 315497. Trooper Johnson J.E. who later became my driver on 31B Jan 1970. Playing darts at the Badcoe Club Vung Tau recreation leave. Trooper I E 'Johnno' Johnson smoking. These appear to be members of 3 Troop probably 31 section on rec leave. The entertainers. Probably 3 Troop somewhere within unit lines - probably 'The Boozer' Nui Dat in 'After Five Wear' i.e. flying suits. 31 section with M-113 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) 31B (the vehicle Robert Taylor became commander of on arrival South Vietnam January 1970). Unidentified village. Looking into the back of an APC ramp down. 31 Section in the bush watching an air strike location unknown. Vehicles lining up on road. Vehicles in the bush. Sand dunes. Oxcart. Tortise. 31B Trooper I E 'Johnno' Johnson. Centurion tanks and Cavalry APCs. Track repair drive sprocket and sidewall sheared away from body of APC. APC 31B with Trooper Johnson driving. Centurion tanks and tank bridge. 31 Section bogged down. Brew time assume in APC 31A as the man on the right is Corporal (Cpl) Chris Blackett. The crew commander when I arrived SVN January 1970. Artillery. Showering. Cpl Chris Blackett's birthday. Bogged down. Rest and recreation Bangkok Thailand. APCs 31 and 98A and tanks. Trooper Johnson on top of APC 31B taking a bow. Tanks in creek. Chinook helicopter. Trucks. Helicopter pick up. Road scene. APC.
