McLarty, Hector Roy MM (Lieutenant, b.1887 - d.1964)
Collection relating to the First World War service of 1857 Lieutenant Hector Roy McLarty MM, who served with 3 Field Artillery Brigade at Gallipoli. Collection consists of six typed letters (copies and extracts) dated between May and August 1915, written on Gallipoli, by McLarty to his family. The letters describe the landing, attacks on trenches, artillery observation, food, lice and flies, casualties, and comments about the Turkish soldiers. Also included is a typed letter from Harry L Paine to Mrs Welsman regarding the death of her son, 731 Private Ernest Walter Welsman who died on 15 July 1915; and typed transcriptions of two letters found on a Turkish soldier. McLarty later served in France, where he was awarded the Military Medal for action at Messines in June 1917. McLarty returned to Australia in 1919.
