Description
Four members of 1 Platoon, A Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), about to move off from a secure area after taking a break during a patrol near the Kalimantan-Sarawak border. The section commander, Corporal (Cpl) Bingarape has just given the section's forward scout Private (Pte) McGrath a compass bearing and the general direction to follow. Pte McGrath has a 30 round magazine inserted into his 7.62 mm L1A1 self-loading rifle, (SLR), a practice adopted by many forward scouts. Left to right: 214035 Lance Corporal (LCpl) Harold James Spradbrow, second in charge of the section; 15634 Cpl Mial Bingarape, a Torres Strait Islander and the Section Commander; (standing) 16498 Private Arthur (Snoopy) Dennis; and Pte McGrath, the section's forward scout. LCpl Spradbrow and Pte Dennis both served with 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (7RAR) in South Vietnam where Corporal Spradbrow was awared the Military Medal.
