Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX45177 Lieutenant Eric Lloyd Jory, 2/13 Australian Infantry Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, Middle East and Australia, 1941-1950.

Wallet 1 of 2 – Contains two folders of material relating to Lieutenant Eric Lloyd Jory.

Wallet 1 of 2, Folder 1 of 2 consists of one diary of Lieutenant Jory, containing entries dated between 1 November 1941 and 29 November 1945. This diary covers the period of Lieutenant Jory’s embarkation and service with 2/13 Australian Infantry Battalion in Palestine, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. In his diary, Lieutenant Jory writes about his embarkation, life on board the ship, censoring mail, recreational activities, disembarking in the Middle East, settling into camp, doing administrative tasks, receiving mail from home, leading a platoon, sightseeing while on leave, hearing news of the war, participating in training, the weather, Christmas celebrations, attending church parades, doing orderly officer duties, taking photographs, being frustrated with inactivity, seeing films, being on garrison duty, travelling to Egypt, doing guard duties at a prisoner of war camp, enemy air raids, digging in at El Alamein, being under enemy artillery fire, life in the trenches, going on patrols, swimming in the Mediterranean, organising training exercised while away from the front line, his feelings on preparing to return to the battlefield, officers who were killed, being in a rest camp, leaving the desert, and his journey home to Australia. This diary also contains entries relating to Lieutenant Jory’s honeymoon in 1945, and various lecture notes.

Wallet 1 of 2, Folder 2 of 2 consists of correspondence, documents and souvenirs of Lieutenant Jory. This folder contains:
1x Notebook containing lyrics of hymns and songs, [date unknown].
2x Typed portions of letters written by Lieutenant Jory, Middle East, February-c June 1942. These portions of letters describe Lieutenant Jory’s experiences of leave in Jerusalem, Palestine and Bécharré (Bsharri), Lebanon.
1x Special Message from Lieutenant-General Montgomery to Officers and Men of the Eighth Army, Egypt, 1942.
1x Order of the Day by Lieutenant-General Sir Oliver W H Leese, Egypt, 1942. This order congratulates the Allied forces who had fought in the battle at El Alamein.
1x Restaurant card for Cunnard White Star Limited, c 1943.

1x Letter from the Australian Military Forces to Lieutenant Jory, Melbourne, Victoria, 30 October 1945. This letter expresses appreciation for Lieutenant Jory’s service on the occasion of his discharge.
1x Form titled ‘Obligations and status of officers after termination of war services’, c 1945.
1x Letter from the Repatriation Commission to Lieutenant Jory, Sydney, New South Wales, 4 August 1949. This letter regards the treatment of malaria due to war service.
1x Letter from the Australian Military Forces to Lieutenant Jory, Paddington, New South Wales, 6 February 1950. This letter advises Lieutenant Jory of the date of his transfer to the Reserve of Officers.

Wallet 2 of 2 – Consists of one notebook of Lieutenant Eric Lloyd Jory. This notebook was used by Lieutenant Jory between c 1941 and c 1986. It contains excerpts of literature, short biographical accounts, poems, prayers, hymns, quotes, newspaper clippings, and a list of details of soldiers in 2/13 Australian Infantry Battalion.
