Description

Photographs relating to NX3112 Bombardier Herbert Huie Armstrong, 2/3 Field Regiment. A motor driver from Concord West, NSW, Armstrong enlisted on 23 October 1939 and he was taken on strength by 2/1 Field Regiment before joining 2/3 Field Regiment. Appointed to lance bombardier on 23 February 1940 and bombardier on 1 April Armstrong arrived in the Middle East on 31 December 1940 and embarked for Crete on 26 March 1941. He was first reported missing on 5 June 1941 and officially confirmed as a prisoner of war on 11 November 1942. At the end of the war Armstrong was recovered and arrived in the United Kingdom on 15 May 1945. He was discharged at his own request on compassionate grounds on 21 September 1945. Photographs include:
2 x group portraits from German prisoner of war camp Stalag VIIIB. Armstrong is front row, third from the right in the formal photograph (20 men) and front row, fifth from the left, seated on ground in the informal photograph.
4 x personal photographs sent to NX3112 Bombardier Herbert Huie Armstrong, 2/3 Field Regiment, by his family during his time in German prisoner of war camps. Stamped on reverse.
