Michael Storen interviewed by Don Barnby at the Australian War Memorial
Michael (Mick) Storen as former member of 6RAR and veteran of the Vietnam war, interviewed about his experiences and the song “ I was only 19”, by Don Barnby at the Australian War Memorial. The interview commences with recollections of childhood in South Australia before discussion of enlistment. Other topics discussed include recruit training in Puckapunyal; how he came to join the infantry corp; arrival at Nui Dat and associated incidents; observations about unit members and personalities; the meaning of the phrase “light green”, and patrols undertaken, including the patrol in which Lt Peter Hines lost his life to a land mine. Towards the end of the interview Mick Storen reflects on the song by Redgum (1983), “I was only 19”, which was inspired by his experiences.
