History / Summary

Corporal Norma Isobel Greenwood (née Simpson) enlisted to the Australian Women’s Army Service on 23 March 1943. After serving as a clerk in Melbourne, she was transferred to serve as a bookkeeper at Murchison Prisoner of War Camp, Victoria. While working at Murchison, Corporal Greenwood met a German prisoner of war named Charly. She and Charly wrote secret letters to each other and became friends. However, Corporal Greenwood was transferred to Melbourne when their friendship was discovered. On 7 April 1945, Corporal Greenwood married Lieutenant Arthur Alton Greenwood, who she had met while serving at Murchison Prisoner of War Camp. She was discharged on 12 June 1945.
