Description

Australian gunners have proved the versatility of the 105 millimetre pack howitzer in action against the Viet Cong in Viet Nam. Usually the guns are transported into action by vehicle or ferried in by helicopter, but a novel way of transporting the guns is by armoured personnel carriers of the First Australian Armoured Personnel Carrier Squadron. The guns and the gunners are carried to the artillery location in relative safety where thew howitzers are dragged out and quickly assembled. In a short time they are ready to play their part in lending support by dropping their 33lb projectiles on Viet Cong strongholds. During this action, the gunners of the First Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, were supporting infantrymen of the Fifth Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, in a search and destroy operation in the Phuoc Tuy province.
