Description

The Fourth Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, celebrated its third birthday at Terendak Garrison, Malacca. Malaysia, with a colourful troop the Colour ceremony. Reviewing officer for the parade was the Chief of the Malaysian Forces staff, General Tunku Osman bin Tunku Mohamed Jewa, a personal friend of the battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel C.H.A. Colin East. More than 500 military and civilian guests watched the parade. Senior officers and troops from other units in the 28th Commonwealth Infantry Brigade, of which 4 RAR is a component, were among the guests. The Fourth Battalion was raised at Woodside Barracks, South Australia, on February 1, 1964. After 20 months' training in Australia, with major exercises in Queensland and Victoria, the Fourth Battalion relieved the Third Battalion in Malaysia on October 5th 1965. The battalion ended its first operational tour of duty in Sarawk, Borneo, in September, 1966 and returned to its nominal role as part of the British Commonwealth Far East Strategic Reserve. The present commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Colin East is one of Australia's best known soldiers. He succeeded Lieutenant-Colonel David Thomson as CO in November, 1966. The Colours of the Fourth Battalion were presented by the then Governor-General of Australia, Viscount De L'Isle, at a ceremonial parade on Adelaide Oval, South Australia, on April 11, 1965.
