Description
Two Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) nurses, Sister Dora S Gardam (left) and Sister E Mavis Hannah, staff members of 2/4th Casualty Clearing Station (CCS), sitting with three Royal Navy sailors on the steps of what may have been the CCS's quarters. Sister Gardam died on Banka Island, Netherlands East Indies, on 4 April 1945 while a prisoner of war (POW) of the japanese. Sister Hannah a member of 2/4th CCS's nursing staff and VFX613330 Sister Vivian Bullwinkel were the only two nursing staff to survive the sinking of SS Vyner Brooke and captivity as POWs.
