4 RAR bursary presentation Malaysia DPR/TV/660
Description
Eight Malaysian youngsters, who attend the tiny Pantai Kundor school in Malacca, have been given greater educational chances by Australian soldiers serving in nearby Terendak Garrison. The school has been adopted, under a Civil Aid programme, by the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. Each of the children - selected on previous school results, present ability and family need for assistance - received a salary of $50 Malaysian (about $15 Australian). Commanding Officer of the Battalion, Lieutenant-Colonel Colin East, Previously of Canberra, is Fluent in the Malay language and he addressed the gathering of village elders and parents.
