Description

The Adjutant General (Major-General A.L. MacDonald) paid a brief visit to Ap Suoi Nghe during a tour of Australian installations, civil aid projects, and talks with troops. Four miles north of the 1st Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam, the village is expanding as more refugee families are brought in from outlying areas for resettlement. General MacDonald spoke with engineers assisting families improve their houses and blocks of land, and was briefed by Lieutenant- Colonel John McDonagh, of Dickson Canberra, Canberra, ACT, the Commander of 1st Australian Civil Aid Unit, responsible for the project. Situated on a ridge line, the villagers will finally be able to grow their own vegetables and rice, and be virtually self supporting. Before he moved off, General MacDonald spoke with members of Vietnamese families through an interpreter. He was met at Task Force Headquarters by its Commander Brigadier Stewart Graham.
