Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of 401643 Flying Officer David Thomas Barnard DFM, No. 459 Squadron, 1942-1944.

Collection consists of twenty postcards (three of which were sent together) dating from 1942-1943 with scenes from Belfast, Cape Town, Glasgow, Bournemouth, Winchester, and one comedic postcard depicting a monkey exercising. All are addressed to family and/or friends, and discuss varying general sentiments such as birthday and Christmas wishes, thanks for parcels, and brief details about the places depicted on the postcards. Included are: one gravure (print) letter card dated 15 April 1942 depicts five scenes from Salisbury, United Kingdom, including three scenes from Salisbury Cathedral, with a written note on the back; three Christmas cards addressed to family from the years 1942-1944; four letters and one telegram, dated June to September 1943, regarding the awarding of the Distinguished Flying Medal to Flying Officer Barnard for piloting a Hudson FH311 which was responsible for the sinking of an enemy submarine U-97 in June 1943.
