Chalmers, Cresswell Herbert (Lieutenant, b.1922 - d.2009)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX44333 Lieutenant Cresswell Herbert Chalmers, Z Special Unit, Borneo. Collection consists of a handwritten notebook kept by Chalmers during his service in Borneo as part of Z Special Unit, 1945. The notebook is the only known first-hand account of Platypus 8, an operation which involved inserting small groups into the Balikpapan area of Dutch Borneo to gather information and organise the local people as resistance fighters against the Japanese. The notebook includes names, ages and other information about the local people from various villages, and an account of a encounter with the Japanese in mid July in the Lake Melingtang, Mahakam, Balajan and Kahala River areas, which is written in the form of notes.
Also included is a 7 page handwritten document written by Chalmers around 1996 in the form of an post operational report. The report is a fuller account of the one described in the notebook.
There are also 2 digital transcriptions of the diary and document, authored by Christine James in 2012.
