Description

Bust of Captain Edward (Tip) Broughton, who was the commander of the 2nd A.I.F. 8th Employment Company. Set up to provide labour support to assist the war effort, the Employment Company consisted of many ‘enemy aliens’. The 8th company was made up largely of refugees, hundreds from the Dunera group and internees from Singapore, including Karl Duldig, who produced this sculpture. Captain Edward ‘Tip’ Broughton, provided Duldig with access to clay and plaster so he could continue to produce sculptures. The most ingenious use of materials by Duldig was potatoes, which he used to produce small sculptures while working as a kitchen hand with the 8th company.
