[Sound recording] Mother Machree
Recording of the song titled 'Mother Machree', created as part of the Music and the First World War project. Composed by Chauncey Olcott and Ernest R Ball with lyrics written by Rida Johnston Young. Produced by Chris Latham, with David Hidden as vocalist (baritone) and Alan Hicks on piano. This recording was made at Flat Rock Studios, Sydney, on 23 March 2018. The work is performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.
Chris Latham, producer of this recording, notes: 'This is a superb and exquisite song with a beautiful refrain and chorus. It is the perfect song for anyone to sing. It has a lilt and is lovely. It discusses the pure love of a son for his mother without self-consciousness. It has a deep sentiment and there is something very honest about it. It resonates the experience of being away from loved ones during war.'
