[Sound recording] The trumpeter
Recording of the song titled, 'The Trumpeter', created as part of the Music and the First World War project. Lyrics written by J Francis Barron with music composed by J Airlie Dix. Produced by Chris Latham, with Rohan Thatcher as vocalist (baritone), and Alan Hicks on piano. The work is performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.
Chris Latham, producer of the recording, notes: 'This song starts with a trumpeter calling. It is a very clever use of the trumpet all the way through and is quite stirring. The trumpeter is calling home all his friends who are dead and there is real sentiment at this point. The idea is that they will ascend and go to heaven where they will live on. It is very Victorian and transcendent. The song is a dignified version of propaganda and has an epic quality like Rudyard Kipling. It is a great song and very powerful.'
