[Sound recording] I hear you calling me
Recording of the song titled, 'I hear you calling me', created as part of the Music and the First World War project. Lyrics written by Harold Harford with music composed by Charles Marshall. Produced by Chris Latham, with Andrew Goodwin as vocalist (tenor), and Alan Hicks on piano. This recording was made at Flat Rock Studios, Sydney, on 17 January 2018. The work is performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.
Chris Latham, producer of this recording, notes: 'This is a professional song. It is a John McCormack, [famous Irish tenor] type song that shows off the vocalist’s tenor voice. It is the definition of a professional song to show off what they can do and is very athletic. It features a trick in that everyone expects full throttle but it pulls back. The song floats and the vocalist is required to sing high without singing loud. It has an exceptionally beautiful melody and could be described as an art song. It could also work in a concert party context for a tender moment. It is a love song with memory of the loved one. There is no more beautiful melody than this one.'
