[Sound recording] Break the news to mother
Recording of the song titled, 'Break The News To Mother', created as part of the Music and the First World War project. Music and lyrics written by Charles Kassell Harris. Produced by Chris Latham, with Andrew Goodwin as vocalist (tenor), and Alan Hicks on piano. This recording was made at Flat Rock Studios, Sydney, on 2 February 2018. The work is performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.
Chris Latham, producer of this recording, notes: 'This is high-pointed sentiment. Musically there is nothing surprising in it but it really works. There is a tranche of songs about the love of a son for his mother but this one has both as it also mentions love for his father. It represents young men who have run off to war – underage. The chorus is catchy because you can hear it a couple of times and learn it. Beautiful melody and lyrics discuss pure love without cynicism. The song is sentimental with sentiment in it. It is a great melody to sing along with that could be sung by everyone.'
