[Sound recording] Friend 'O Mine
Recording of the song titled, 'Friend 'O Mine', created as part of the Music and the First World War project. Lyrics written by Frederic Edward Weatherly with music composed by Wilfred Sanderson. Produced by Chris Latham, with Rohan Thatcher as vocalist (baritone), and Alan Hicks on piano. This recording was made at Wesley Music Centre, Canberra, on 8 May 2016. The work is performed in the spirit of the time with some changes made for the modern ear.
Chris Latham, producer of this recording, notes: 'This isn’t a war song but it seems as though it is. The song gives the impression of artillery and the feeling that you are in a dugout. This song has real sentiment. The lyrics focus on loyal friends and the ideas of getting through situations with a loyal friend and the possibility of being separated by fate. It is curious that the lyrics directly reflect the war experience. The lyrics also illustrate the bonds between men. This song was the discovery of something beautiful and is one of the gems of the Music and the First World War project.'
