Description
Letters relating to the First World War service of Brigadier General Harold Edward Elliott, 7th Battalion. Some of the letters were censored by Pompey, and later his daughter Violet prior to donation removing details of a personal nature. The letters cover June 1915 - December 1915 detailing; his return to Gallipoli and the delight of his men; the state of the trenches; mass amounts of casualties; the lack of training new arrivals had; the work and the courage of his men; a narrow escape; the emotions surrounding finding the dead; the constant shelling of the trenches; a hand drawn map of a section of the trenches describing them as a labyrinth; being shelled as they dig out more trenches; his hospitalisation due to fever; the change in shape of the trenches to obtain a better view including a drawing of the changes; his stay in England; his weight gain and loss of strength and the subsequent fear of weakness when returning to Gallipoli; expressions of love towards his wife; return to hospital due to a damaged tendon in his ankle.
