Elliott, Harold Edward 'Pompey' (Brigadier); CB CMG, DSO, DCM, VD
Collection relating to Brigadier Harold Edward 'Pompey' Elliott, CB CMG, DSO, DCM, VD, 1901-1968. It comprises a range of papers documenting his military service in South Africa, 1900-1901; service during the First World War as commanding officer of 7 Battalion and 15 Brigade; and post war career as a senator in the Victorian Parliament, 1919-1921. Included are his diaries from the two conflicts; letters, 1914-1919, to his wife Catherine (Kate) and other relatives; photographs and service documents. Other papers include correspondence from his troops and their families, and correspondence written in his capacity as a commanding officer. Correspondents include General Birdwood, Brigadier White, Major General Monash, General McCay and Charles Bean the Official Historian.
Elliott's papers were transferred to the Memorial in a number of instalments between 1929 and 1971 by his wife Catherine and daughter Violet. The donations were amalgamated into four collections, 1DRL/0264, 2DRL/0513, 3DRL/3297 and 3DRL/3856. At the time of donation some documents were removed from the Elliott papers and, in keeping with the practice of the time, incorporated into the Memorial's existing published and official records collections. The material previously held in collections 1DRL/0264, 3DRL/3297 and 3DRL/3856, were incorporated into 2DRL/0513 in 2004 and 2005.
