Description

Page 10 of an album of photographs either taken or collected by Roy Cecil Phillipps (later Squadron Leader R.C Phillipps MC & Bar DFC) when employed by the pastoralist firm Connor, Doherty & Durack Ltd in the Kimberley region of Western Australia from 1912 until his enlistment in the AIF in April 1915. The photographs were sent to his mother in Perth, Mrs Cecil R. Phillipps, who arranged them in an album and wrote the accompanying captions. Images are of: "Note that this man appears to be mounting with his right foot in the stirrup. A freak photo taken by Roy" (album caption); an unidentified pastoralist, most like a member of the Durack family, rests with his dogs at Argyle Downs Homestead; "Capture of the wily crocodile" (album caption); Two unidentified Aboriginal domestic maids look on as a station hand feeds a group of joeys (see also P08151.010.004); Formal outdoor portrait of a group of Aboriginal men, women and children. Some men and women wear European clothing while others wear traditional Aboriginal dress of loincloths. Portrait depicts some tribal body scarring and traditional body paint (see also P08151.010.005) and an unidenitifed ship in an unknown location, most likely Cambridge Gulf.
