Description

Letters relating to the First World War service of Major Philip Llewellyn Howell-Price, 1st Battalion. These letter were written by Howell-Price to his family and were copied by the Australian War Memorial in 1927. Covering the dates between 23 October 1914 and 25 September 1917, these letters mention: his voyage on board the HMAT Afric; sightseeing in Cairo; the landing at Gallipoli; fighting at Gallipoli; the Turkish counter attack of the 19th of May; life in the trenches at Gallipoli; the death of his friends Albert George McGuire and Royston Kennilworth Sydney May; his frustration at being in hospital rather than the battlefield; the Battle of Pozieres; the lack of reinforcements from Australia and how that will affect forthcoming battles; his ambition to command the 1st Battalion; His being awarded the Military Cross and the death of Philip Sydney Soane Woodforde and his brothers Owen and Richmond (Dick) Howell-Price.
