Description

Joyce Radbone and SX8476 Sergeant (Sgt) John Eric Clinton Stephens, 2/3 Machine Gun Battalion, interviewed by Alison Viney Houghton for her "The Age of Innocence 1937-1947" oral history project. The interview covers topics related to their experiences as young people during the Second World War. Joyce lived in Stirling, SA, and speaks about subjects such as the billeting scheme; scarcity of housing, reactions of people in the community to soldiers being killed overseas; nursing and the Red Cross; Lew Walker and strongyloids. Sgt Stephens speaks about subjects related to his service, including the leadership of SX6962 Brigadier Arthur Seaforth Blackburn. He enlisted in 1940 and fought in Syria, and later became a prisoner of war.
