Letters between Malcolm William Keshan and Dorothy Williams, January-June 1943

Letters relating to the Second World War service of NX11067 Malcolm “Mac” William Keshan, 2/4th Australian Infantry Battalion. Malcolm William Keshan and his girlfriend Dorothy Williams wrote to each other regularly while he was a prisoner of war of the Germans during the Second World War.

In the letters that Malcolm wrote to Dorothy between January and June 1943, he describes to her what he can about life in the prisoner of war camp. He tells of playing football and basketball, reading, studying, listening to the camp orchestra, and playing a “leading lady” in concerts produced by the inmates. He shares that he always looks forward to her letters, and regularly reassures her of his love.

In Dorothy’s letters that she wrote to Malcolm between January and June 1943, she tells him about her day-to-day life in Sydney, including a family holiday to Kangaroo Valley, sports, work and changing jobs, and swimming at Cronulla. She reminds him of the good times they had spent together, tells him that she often wonders what he is doing, and that she misses him dreadfully.

Malcolm and Dorothy married after the war, in 1946.
