Letters between Malcolm William Keshan and Dorothy Williams, July-December 1943

Letters relating to the Second World War service of NX11067 Malcolm “Mac” William Keshan, 2/4th Australian Infantry Battalion. Malcolm William Keshan and his girlfriend Dorothy Williams wrote to each other regularly while he was a prisoner of war of the Germans during the Second World War.

In the letters that Malcolm wrote to Dorothy between July and December 1943, he tells her what he can of life in the prisoner of war camp. He relates that he and his fellow inmates play sports when the weather is good, and read and play cards when it is not. He also shares that the orchestra (made up of fellow prisoners) plays the same music that he and Dorothy danced to before he left, and that it brings back strong memories. In every letter, Malcolm tells Dorothy that he loves her.

In Dorothy’s letters to Malcolm written between July and December 1943, she relates details of her day-to day life in Sydney, including her work in a doctor’s office, evening recreational activities, and family events. She also tells him that several people that they knew were also prisoners of war, and that her cousin Jack, who was also serving, was missing. She also shares with Malcolm that she does get lonely, but that she loves him very much and will eagerly wait for him to return.
Malcolm and Dorothy married after the war, in 1946.
