Description

Letters relating to the Second World War service of NX11067 Malcolm “Mac” William Keshan, 2/4th Australian Infantry Battalion. Malcolm William Keshan and his girlfriend Dorothy Williams wrote to each other regularly while he was a prisoner of war of the Germans during the Second World War.

In the letters that Malcolm wrote to Dorothy between January and June 1944, he tells her what he can of life in the prisoner of war camp. He relates an attempt by the inmates to create an ice skating rink, a flu epidemic in the camp, playing football, and that he was sick and tired of playing cards. He also tells Dorothy that he often wonders what it would be like to see her again, and declares that, though his faith was shaken in many things, he still had faith in her.

In the letters from Dorothy to Malcolm written between January and June 1944, she relates details of her day-to day life in Sydney, including her work, recreational activities, meeting a repatriated prisoner of war who told her about the camps, an ill-fated fishing trip, having tea with his family, and voting for the first time. She also imagined what it would be like when she and Malcolm reunited, and reassured him of her love.

Malcolm and Dorothy married after the war, in 1946.
