Letters between Malcolm William Keshan and Dorothy Williams, July-December 1944

Letters relating to the Second World War service of NX11067 Malcolm “Mac” William Keshan, 2/4th Australian Infantry Battalion. Malcolm William Keshan and his girlfriend Dorothy Williams wrote to each other regularly while he was a prisoner of war of the Germans during the Second World War.

In the letters that Malcolm wrote to Dorothy between July and December 1944, he relates to her what he can of life in the prisoner of war camp. He tells how they produce their shows and concerts, playing cards (which he had become very tired of), and creating an ice skating rink to play hockey on. He also expressed that he missed Dorothy and often imagined what it would be like to see her again.

In the letters from Dorothy to Malcolm written between July and December 1944, she relates details of her day-to day life in Sydney. She tells him of her work, delays in the mail, going dancing, being a bridesmaid for her cousin, going for lunch with Malcolm’s brother Norm, and visiting a fortune-teller. She also mentions attending the wedding of a friend who married an American Lieutenant after a four day engagement, and a surprise birthday party that her family and friends threw for her. In her letters, Dorothy reassures Malcolm that she loves him very much, remains true to him, and is hopeful that he will return home soon.
Malcolm and Dorothy married after the war, in 1946.
