Letters between Malcolm William Keshan and Dorothy Williams, 1945
Description
Letters relating to the Second World War service of NX11067 Malcolm “Mac” William Keshan, 2/4th Australian Infantry Battalion. Malcolm William Keshan and his girlfriend Dorothy Williams wrote to each other regularly while he was a prisoner of war of the Germans during the Second World War.
In Malcolm’s letters to Dorothy written in 1945, he tells her that he was sure that it was their year. In April 1945, Malcolm and two fellow prisoners hid as preparations were made for a forced march further into Germany. They succeeded in escaping the camp, and Malcolm wrote Dorothy a letter detailing his journey to England. He was in Piccadilly Circus on Victory in Europe Day, and told Dorothy that he was unimpressed with England and was eager to be home in Australia.
In Dorothy’s 1945 letters to Malcolm, she reflects on the impact of war on mothers and families in Australia. She also shares various items of family news. When she received word that Malcolm was free, she tells him of her excitement and nervousness to see him. She also tells of her experiences as the war drew to a close, such as hearing of Hitler’s death, Victory in Europe Day, and still feeling uneasy about Japan.
Malcolm and Dorothy married after the war, in 1946.
