Description
Letters relating to the Second World War service of NX31913 Private Robert Albert Gray, 2/5th Australian General Hospital. In his letters to his sister Alice Strong (née Gray) written between December 1940 and August 1943, Gray recounts his experiences while in service. Some of these experiences include his embarkation with a reinforcements unit, avoiding censorship for a letter by throwing it overboard in a tin so that someone else could post it, serving in Palestine and deciding to transfer to the 2/5th Australian General Hospital. Gray was working with the Hospital unit in Greece when he was captured as a prisoner of war in April 1941. After his capture, Gray writes to his sister that he appreciates receiving Red Cross Parcels and letters from home, and that he misses the Australian Sun. He also mentions getting his photograph taken with other prisoners, mosquitoes and fleas, and only hearing German news. Also contained in this collection is a letter from Robert to a Mrs Mary Ellery, and an airgraph that Robert sent to Alice when he was freed.
