Letters and papers of Charles Laurie Price, 1942-1945
Letters and papers relating to the Second World War service of NX55503 Staff Sergeant Charles Laurie Price, 10 Australian General Hospital.
Price wrote letters to his wife Marion between May 1942 and September 1945, while he was a prisoner of war of the Japanese. In his letters he writes about his experiences, including embarkation, his impressions of Malaya, serving with his unit in Malacca, being evacuated to Singapore, and the air raids and fall of Singapore in February 1942. Price then writes about being held at Salarang Barracks, Changi Camp, and includes details such as his work in the camp hospital, receiving poor rations, attending lectures and plays, having numerous illnesses, the death of a close friend, and frog racing. He was then moved to Kranji camp, where he wrote that he continued his hospital work, read books, ate an unusual supplementary diet, experienced Allied air raids, and finally heard that peace was declared in August 1945.
This collection also includes papers gathered by Price during and after the war, including lecture notes on the Malayan Peninsula and campaign and an invitation to his welcome home dinner in November 1945.
