Description

Correspondence relating to the Second World War service of NX20572 Corporal Alexander Roland Campbell Johnstone, 2/15th Field Regiment and Audit Office, Command Pay Staff of the AIF in Malaya.

This file includes instructions issued to prisoners of war in Jinsen camp by Colonel Y. Noguchi warning against hostility, and letters from Johnstone to his wife Marguerite, “Peg”, dated between 3 November 1942 and 31 August 1945. The letters contain well-wishes, plans for the future, and descriptions of life in prisoner of war camps. Also included are telegrams from the Minister for the Army to Marguerite Johnstone confirming Johnstone's location in 1942 and his recovery in 1945, handmade greeting cards given to Johnstone while incarcerated, and a note in Russian accompanied by a translation regarding the gifting of a sword from officers in the Red Army.
