Description

Letters and papers relating to the First World War service of Second Lieutenant Harold Gordon Cornell, No. 2 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps.

This collection contains letters from 2nd Lt. Cornell to his wife, Millie, that were written between 1 and 30 December 1916 on his voyage aboard the troopship HMAT Ulysses to a training camp in England. In these letters, he writes about the landscape, building, culture and people at Freetown, Sierra Leone. He also notes the problems of censorship, food supplies, church services and parades, sickness and the conditions of the camp.

Documents that were compiled while he was training as a pilot at Netheravon Airfield in England as well as Cornell's graduation certificate certifying qualification for service in the Royal Flying Corps are also included.
