Memorial card for 1033 Private (Pte) Robert ‘Hoppy’ Alder, 31st Australian Infantry Battalion. A gardener prior to enlisting on 14 July 1915, he embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Wandilla (A62) on 9 November 1915. Having broken his leg at the age of 15 and gained a permanent limp, his parents had believed that he would not be sent to active service overseas. Pte was killed in action on 21 July 1916, and was buried in Anzac Cemetery, Sailly-sur-la-Lys, Nord Pas de Calais, France. He was 19 years old.
