not titled [ramp ceremony for Sapper Jamie Larcombe]
Joseph Passmore was a member of 2 Cavalry Regiment when, on 19 February 2011 in the Mirabad Valley region of Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan, his patrol was fired on by insurgents and Australian Sapper Jamie Larcombe and an Afghan interpreter were killed. Their patrol continued for multiple days and suffered further major contacts and an IED (improvised explosive device) blast.
Passmore was unable to attend the ramp ceremony held for Sapper Larcombe as he was still out on patrol. He was later given a photograph by a friend taken at the ceremony, on which he based this drawing. The drawing was intended to be larger, but was scaled down and left deliberately unfinished after a mishap left a stain on the drawing. Instead of discarding the work, the artist retained it as a significant point of connection to the ramp ceremony that he was unable to attend, before donating it to the Memorial.
