Description

One of the first buildings to be seen on entering the 1st Australian Logistic Support Group base at Vung Tau, Vietnam, is the Anzac Chapel. Built by engineers from 17 Construction Squadron, the chapel is all denominational. It is a completely wooden structure with the exception of a galvanized iron roof. The engineers also designed the chapel and built the altar, lectern and pews. Chaplain Roy Bedford of Mosman, Sydney, NSW, who is one of three padres to use the chapel, said the design was ideal and resulted in the building being one of the coolest in the Support base area. Among regular members of the congregation are wounded and sick troops from the neighbouring 1 Field Hospital in the base. The first service to be held in the chapel was on Good Friday.
