Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of Lieutenant Colonel William Watt Leggatt, DSO, MC, 2/40 Infantry Battalion, Timor and Changi, 1942-1945.

Wallet 1 of 2 - Collection contains records prepared by Lieutenant Colonel Leggatt as commanding officer of 2/40th Australian Infantry Battalion or "Sparrow Force" during the defence of Timor and later when in captivity at Changi prisoner of war camp. Collection includes Leggatt's diary, nominal rolls, casualty lists, financial reports and operational reports for Sparrow Force units, and recommendations for honours and awards.

This wallet contains:

Diary containing regular entries detailing daily activities in Changi POW camp, January-September 1945;
Nominal Roll of 2/40th Battalion when located at Bonegilla prior to departure for Darwin and Timor, includes army number, name and next-of-kin [date unknown];
Fatal casualties list for 2/40th Battalion, includes army number, rank, name, next-of-kin and details of death [date unknown];
Sparrow Force casualty list, includes missing, deaths, those believed drowned in various sinkings of POW vessels, burials at Koepang, Timor [c 1942-1945];
Casualty list for various Sparrow Force units, including 2/1 Heavy Battery, 2/1 Fort Company, 2/1 Fort Signals, 2/11 Field Company, AASC, 2/12 Field Ambulance and attached units;
Roll of Sparrow Force casualties and missing, excluding those in Malaya and Thailand, 1945;
Roll of 2/40th Battalion personnel ex Java who passed through Changi POW camp, detailing army number, name, party number, date of departure and remarks, 1945; and
Roll of Sparrow Force personnel for 1945, excluding 2/40th Battalion, and strengths of AIF personnel POWs on Singapore Island by camp in May 1945.
